I am trying my best to review this book without giving anything away. So we have a varied group of people that we are introduced to throughout this book. Robert fought in a war at some point, got a head injury, was addicted to heroin during and after service. Sarah is dying of an in-curable hard to pronounce disease & Emma is her doctor/friend/lover. Leia & Miriam are friends who attend a school and like to party on breaks. Raid ends up being Miriam’s boyfriend. No Name Man, if you can call him that, is very interesting. I love his internal monologue and it’s almost satirical at times and his point of view of humanity is very sad and somewhat true, even though it’s hard to admit. Quite the conundrum.

This book was very hard for me to get into in the beginning. I am used to a nice romance, oh, let’s meet and fall in love, have some sex, a little plot twist and everything works out. This is not that book. I ended up bringing out a pen and paper to try to keep track of all the characters and time frame shifts. The book ranges from 15 years ago to the present and skips back and forth. Once I got to chapter 14 (of which, I love the name for some reason) I stopped taking notes and found that I could follow along much easier. Once I got into it, I found myself trying to guess what would happen next and how everyone would end up being connected. The 3Gs in your cell phone are really funny in Chapter 12. Chapter 46 knocked me on my butt and left my head spinning. If you like suspense, like to think about what is happening, and putting pieces of a puzzle together while reading, then read this book!

Fantastic!
Very well written read! I didn't want it end and am waiting impatiently for the next book!! Highly recommend it!!!
The well written first installment of a series I know that I personally am looking forward to from a fellow writer! The story keeps you immersed, with no lag in the writing and no unnecessary filler.
Great start to what looks to be an amazing series! Couldn't stop reading, and fell in love with all of the characters. The author has an amazing understanding of how life works. I encourage all readers to follow him on his journey through the rest of the series.
It took me a while to get down the characters also but, after I got it I was hooked. Kept me on edge looking forward to next chapter, and now the next book. Hope you don't keep me waiting long.
I read books aloud to my husband so we can both enjoy the stories we have in common. Got side tracked for a few days so decided to start at the beginning again. Glad I did as reading the first several chapters, in building the story, it skipped from character to character and past to present so it wasn't easy piecing the story at first. Restarting the book like we did helped with getting a deeper grasp of the characters and once past a certain point it flowed much easier and it all came together in my brain. I enjoyed reading about the various characters portrayed in this novel and how their lives intertwined. Not what I expected. Each chapter left you wanting to go on to the next. Loved how the story was written and how the author described the characters with the verbiage used. This writer really has a love of language. Very well put together. When I finished the book I wanted to reread it to see if I missed anything as it came to life for me. I am anxiously awaiting the next novel from J.J. Tawes.
Sorry, I'm going to be pretty vague, I don't want to give anything away.
This book is a little hard to review. The amount of characters and timelines were a bit confusing initially. The first 50 pages is mostly world building and character introductions/development. When you meet each character it's at a different stage in the timeline, which can be disorienting at times, but I think it's necessary for the trajectory of the story. The author could have just forced you to read pages and pages of internal monologue about the past. Instead you get a front row seat to the events that made each character who they are when everyone meets up in the present. Its an interesting writing technique, and though it can be a bit puzzling sometimes, it really adds to the story as a whole.

Anyway, once you get past the first 50 pages or so, it's smooth sailing from there. You really get lost in the story and the twists and turns it takes come outta left-field. Every time I thought I knew where the story was headed, I was wrong.

Characters
The killer is such a unique guy. He's so inhuman and human at the same time. He's someone you shouldn't be able to connect with, but as the story moves on you find yourself understanding his motives. It's hard to describe him in a way that makes sense to those that haven't read the story, but he's fascinating to say the least.

The other cast of characters include Robert, Sarah, Emma, Leia, Miriam, and Raid. Robert is a war vet, who was injured during the war. Sarah is a doctor trying to help Emma treat her incurable disease. Leia and Miriam are BFF/party girls, and Raid is a very interesting guy that becomes Miriam's boyfriend. I know what you're thinking what in the world would make such a diverse group come together, well I guess you'll have to read it to find out!

All in all, it was a quick read. The characters are interesting and easy to relate to. And it's a book I want to reread again very soon.
